Our history

1988

Maurice Backhouse started MJ Backhouse Pest Control Services following on from his work carrying out pest control for the National Farmers Union. He starting providing pest control services for the local farmer after the council removed their free option from farm contacts and later went on to win contracts for local power station sites.

1990

The business grew and was able to start employing more pest control engineers to carry out contracts including York British Rail and York University as well as supporting local farms, shops and businesses. Maurice went into partnership with Discrete Pest Control in Leeds after buying a Halifax company called Disinfestation between them.

1993

Darren Backhouse started with the company, taking over the day to day quoting, tendering and pest control jobs. More contract work was awarded including multiple Thomas the Baker shops and MJ Backhouse moved into the current warehouse and office space at Bondgate in Selby.

1995

Tracey Grantham started in the office as workload increased year on year including more contracts and more domestic work. The 50% split of pest control contract work and one-off jobs is still similar in 2020.

2016

MJ Backhouse began working in partnership with Vermtek Pest Control looking after NHS, Starbucks, Vodaphone, Immigration Housing, Busy bees Nursery’s, Cohen’s Chemists all within the Yorkshire area.
